about

The Odum on Chicago Avenue has, for the last 25+ years, served as a creative home to musicians, artists, performers, sound engineers, curators and weirdos. In November 2016, current tenant Pieholden Suite Sound is moving to a new space in Logan Square, the landlord has sold the building and it will likely be demolished.

It is a horrible building, lacking light and proper ventilation, always too hot or too cold, often smelling like sewer gas, the walls are actually crumbling, there are so many ants. It has been my home for the past four years and I have loved it. All of the midnights at the piano, all of the musicians in and out rehearsing and recording, and all of that history, a couple generations of punks and artists and scrappers living weird so they could make their art.

We're the last ones to turn off the lights, so we wanted to mark that somehow. This record is our little offering. Songs one and three are absence. We recorded the building itself – the vents, the fan, the broken carbon monoxide detector, and we recorded all of the amplifiers turned all way up but with nothing plugged into them. Songs two and four are fullness, trying to use as many of the unique instruments here as possible – mellotron, harmonium, tubular bells, etcetera.

Song four is a Tom Paxton cover. Songs one through three are written and performed by Kate Adams and Joshua Dumas. Recorded, mixed and mastered at Pieholden Suite Sound, in the Odum on Chicago Avenue.

Thanks for listening. Goodnight.

Track Name: At the End
I want you there when the sun rises.
I want you there when it sets.
When the light goes out on this tired old world,
I want you there at the end.

I want you there on the mountaintop.
I want there where the creek bends.
Wheresoever we walk in the crooked old world,
I want you there at the end.

If I take your hand once more in that final golden
And all the trials that came before seem merely moments
And in time, we all will find our rest,
I hope to have your hand in mind when I go walking west.

I want you there as a lover
But it’s fair and it’s fine as a friend.
When I draw the blind in the dusk of this world,
I want you there at the end.

I want you there when the sun rises.
I want you there when it sets.
When the light goes out on this tired old world,
I want you there at the end.

If I take your hand once more in that final golden
And all the trials that came before seem merely moments
And in time, we all will find our rest,
I hope to have your hand in mind when I go walking west.
Track Name: Disappearing Stars
I think the stars are disappearing down here.
Jen said “yeah, we lost Perseus for a whole two months last year.
They keep the lights on all night, at the new mall out west.
The doctors say, I’ll probably always be, a little out of breath.
I guess I’ll always feel like I’ve come home running.

She said “I’m sure no one will ever come clean,
But I know it’s got to be from the fire at the refinery.
Remember we bussed to Odina West, the smoke was so bad that year?”
Then she got up from her lawnchair and said “Would you like another beer?”
I said “yeah.”
Track Name: Leftover Things
I stuffed the trashbag full of bedsheets in the hatchback
And gently closed the trunk until it latched.
She said “I best get on the road, before the traffic’s bad.”
I said “Marsha I hope your mother gets better,”
And she glanced at the scatter of her leftover things
We had stacked by the curb for the trash.

She got stuck at the light at Henry and Sackett
So I ran the block and we said goodbye again
As she pull away, I just waved and waved
I just waved and waved.
Track Name: Last Thing on My Mind
It's a lesson too late for the learning,
Made of sand, made of sand.
In the wink of an eye my soul is turning
In your hand, in your hand.

Are you going away with no word of farewell,
Will there be not a trace left behind?
I could have loved you better, didn't mean to be unkind.
You know that was the last thing on my mind.

You've got reasons a-plenty for going
This I know, this I know.
For the weeds have been steadily growing.
Please don't go, please don't go.

Are you going away with no word of farewell,
Will there be not a trace left behind?
I could have loved you better, didn't mean to be unkind.
You know that was the last thing on my mind.

As I lie in my bed in the morning
Without you, without you.
Each song in my breast dies a-borning
Without you, without you.

Are you going away with no word of farewell,
Will there be not a trace left behind?
I could have loved you better, didn't mean to be unkind.
You know that was the last thing on my mind.
