Trouble in Bismarck (47X-101) M’s stash of iodine tabs Went missing in Fargo after the train So we’ve cut south to Bismarck Camp Benzo, the Pharma Ruins, Làngfèi The air is thick with smoke and sickness Grey hueco nod by a trash fire We keep to shadows but each step, all over, I'm feeling their eyes. With all the good I’ve seen it’s easy to forget How trouble can make you mean if you dance too close to it A person’s a dangerous thing when they’ve got little left Trouble can make you mean if you sleep too near to it The maijia wound us round A maze of narrow streets We should have cut and run When we saw the other three M grabbed my arm and took the tabs When she saw the knife Any turn was the right one Each step all over I’m feeling their eyes With all the good I’ve seen it’s easy to forget How trouble can make you mean if you dance too close to it A person’s a dangerous thing when they’ve got little left Trouble can make you mean if you sleep too near to it “Qù nǐ mā de” M said As we set down our packs We’d run for half an hour The whole time looking back I sat by our small fire M sleeping at my side Watching the shadows the whole night, all over I’m feeling their eyes

A Long Walk Under a Gray Sky (48X-102)

He Loved Winter (LYN805) Dawnlight on frost covered grass The whisper of an icy wind The shiver of a northern blast Snowfall blanketing the meadow Nightsky in January cold Holds the starshine gentle Relishing the brightness Cloudless calm and brittle And I’m trying to find the words to describe Seasons she may never see The warm flit of a campfire Orange on leave-less trees A chill a hungry slumber The soft and pale fields And I’m trying to find the words to describe Seasons she may never see When I was a child In the blue grey quiet The ice would freeze so thick We could walk across it Like in the old time vits March was marked by meltings Of earth and green revealing Respite and life-breathing And I’m trying to find the words to describe Seasons she may never see

Another Long Walk, Another Gray Sky (48X-103)
5.
Andy’s Warbent (LYN298) She wakes in a fever all her blankets in a knot She shudders and trembles But she tries to play it off She sees Greys in the shadows still She jumps if somethings dropped We'll find some vacant suburb A place the war has spared Grow our own food, get some quiet And try to start again A drone too close, she whispered And shivered in her shock I held her through the night And prayed we'd make it out Your eyes on mine Stay with me We'll find some vacant suburb A place the war has spared Grow our own food, get some quiet And try to start again She's struggled to shake it Even though the fighting’s stopped
6.
The Wastes of N Dakota (47X-104) Soot hills envy charcoal skies In the wastes of N Dakota I think I hear a fury In the canyon Gravel, glass, and turbine bits Sandpaper the granite I’ve seen vits that claim the storm’s the same From when my Dads were kids Searched the hills for crevices A place for us to shelter Folks have been cast out from here Since before my memory started Just then the cyclone crests Bent as if to greet us I pointed toward the shadows On the east side of the hill The spinning mass unbraided Ever closer at our backs I felt its breath hot on my neck Tempting our surrender As the great storm swallowed up The shelf of shale we stood on We folded ourselves snug into A space between the boulders

No Juice (LYN###) [inaudible]

Solar Station at the Dawson Airstrip (47X-105) M is still coughing hard nearly every time she takes a breath in An outside pocket on my pack fell apart, sanded clean through by the wind There are less folks up here than I thought there’d be, but the station is a challenging climb The LYN has been dead for two weeks, and it felt like such a long time We’ve been hard pressed, but doing our best to keep our spirits up when we can, I’m still good for a laugh or two says M The guy who seems to run the place says it’s 40 yrs since they fell off the grid He’s got no reason to leave here, he’s made a home in the hangar with his kid They don’t really ration power anymore, they figure if you make it it’s earned All these folks are weary, but they share stories & food & wait their turn We’ve been hard pressed, but doing our best to keep our spirits up when we can, I’m still good for a laugh or two says M Turns out all the stories are true, sounds like they’ve got it better up north We met a woman from Edmonton, she’s been sneaking plums across the border She said their cities still have running water, and they keep their kids in school til grade eight M smiled at me with tears in her eyes and said “It finally feels like we’re gonna make it.” We’ve been hard pressed, but doing our best to keep our spirits up when we can, I’m still good for a laugh or two says M

Always Watching Over Me (LYN762) My daughter Sleeping in the moonlight I wonder What you might become
10.
His Garden (LYN641) I’m at my happiest when my knees are damp with earth I think I’ll put in meadowsweet next to the tulsi by the linden tree Prem always teases me when I come covered in dirt But then he spoils me using his water to wash beneath my shirt It takes a certain kind of fool To ask more of the soil after all we’ve put it through But if there’s any earthen grace Grow, and let my family survive in this place There’s mugwort for Andy, she’s been having nightmares since we left camp Judd A raised bed of fenugreek, Prem said his mama would make family recipes And freestone nectarines, with any luck the tree will fruit in 3 springs The way the seasons stumble now, a sprout of any green would be a blessing It takes a certain kind of fool To ask more of the soil after all we’ve put it through But if there’s any earthen grace Grow, and let my family survive in this place

{ 47X-101 to 46X-106 } { April, Year 120 } { 700km }
The Wakerobin Archive Book 02

To Yellowknife is set 80 years after the Incident at Wakerobin Hollow, and follows The Kid’s journey from New Green Bay to Yellowknife. She risks a challenging traverse across a desertified landscape and a covert crossing at the militarized Canadian border in hope that a better life awaits in post-glacial Yukon Inc. She carries a battered lùyīn, an audio diary from her adopted father’s time as a field medic in the Second American Civil War.

IN THIS CHAPTER:
After a fraught resupply in Bismarck, The Kid and M walk a far-flung route across N Dakota to avoid dangerous superstorms that tear through the Badlands. These are hard, desolate kilometers past windfarms, ranches, and silicon factories long abandoned to the heat and smog. Before the lùyīn runs out of power, The Kid learns about the seasons of her father’s youth, his friendship with Andy, and her post-war trauma. The Kid and M finally find respite when they stop for power and meet someone who’s crossed the northern border. Buoyed by this hopeful news and her father’s loving recordings, they press on to meet Robin.
