0101OA00 There’s almost no one left here who remembers The quiet song you’d sing at my cradle. The words near-lost to time, The melodies, the rhymes. It was the first frost on the garden. It was your first chance as a father. I was so small and so peculiar, So recent from the Other Side. I’d squirm and weep and cry, So recent from the Other Side. I do remember the last line; You’d sing “everything is going to be alright.” You’d look me in the eyes, believing. You were trying to be kind. You were trying to be kind. I do remember the last line; You’d sing “everything is going to be alright.” I was so recent from the Other Side. You’d look me in the eyes, believing. You were trying to be kind. You were trying to be kind.

Black Soot 04:11
0201OA09 Black soot fell On our walk home. Something was wrong At the plant outside of town. And even though We were probably too old, We took each other’s hand and slowed, Maybe not wanting to know.

0305OA10 There’s oil in the water Oil in the water I’m sure I can taste it Like cobwebs in every sip. Oil in the water Oil in the water Ever since the accident I thought I’d never see my wife again Oil in the water Oil in the water Yeah I guess it’s something All the pretty widows buying shots for me Oil in the water It goes down easy I thought I’d never see my girls again Oil in the water Oil in the water Bright hot and orange throughout the factory I hear the foremen calling “Run run run” “Run run run” There’s oil in the water “Run run run” Oil in the water “Run run run”

0401OA14 We dusted off the sidewalk chalk And stretched our legs in the shade. Your father’s expecting you’ll take over the shop But you dream of going away “Somewhere you can’t hear the cicadas,” you said. “Somewhere the roads are paved.” I almost offered to go with you But then we heard shouting from the driveway. The big burr oak swayed gently In the evening breeze I remember the fireflies filling the backyard As you laid out your plans to leave. Little Joey came running ‘round the corner With tears in his small blue eyes “A bee stung me on the belly,” he cried. We consoled him as we walked inside. We put butter on the beesting And I asked you again about the store. You turned around and turned the stove on And said “Let’s not talk about it anymore.”

0504OA17 I thought I heard a rustle in the woods. We were swimming in the quarry beneath a lime half-moon. I called out to the shore, “Julia is that you?” But all I got in answer Was August wind through poplar leaves And crickets quiet murmuring And something somewhere out there in the trees. And then the sound of laughter near the creek; Jen and Emma with a bottle stolen from their Mama’s place. I waved and called out, “Over here! The water’s great.” Maybe because the moon was bright I thought I ought to look away The sisters pulled their jean shorts off And joined me in the lake. Then Julia came riding on her bike, She said, “Jon gave us cigs and licorice but he works late tonight.” She took a pull of whiskey and dove in too We swam beneath the starlight And fireflies lit recklessly We teased Jen about her boyfriend I said, “There’s no guy at Odena High for me.” I thought I heard a rustle in the woods. And there behind the girls in the undergrowth A green-eyed doe was stumbling through the brush Before I could exclaim A coyote howled mournfully The injured doe limbed away Before any of my friends could see it
