In the proudlight Of the yellow moon, The birches swim White in the wind. The dirt has a gravelust for water. Overcast skies are a promise. Lost my flashlight in the river. Lost my flashlight in those waters. 0605xx18

I was having a cigarette on Jarret Street When a gray-haired man asked if he could buy one from me. I didn’t think much of it at the time Until he wandered into the bar that night. In the neon light I could see, But I’m not sure when I believed That worn down man, Was someone so familiar to me. He pushed the candle away, He said "I can't abide an open flame." I heard a little Alabama in his tone. I said, “what brings you to Asheville on your own?” He said, “I lost my old life in a fire. It made me distant, mean and a liar. And I don’t know where I’m going, I just know I’m tired." I slid a beer across the bar and he gave me a nod. I stepped into the alley to give Julia a call. I said, “I know it’s your night off, but can you come downtown? I think Jen and Emma’s Dad is sitting in our bar.” 0704AE25

I called the landlord about the hall light. He said he’d have it fixed by Friday. Listen Marsha there’s something you should know, About me and Robert from the Mothlight When I told him he said nothing. He just kept pacing back and forth. Later that night I came home angry, You joked, "let’s move to New York." Child, your roots are strong enough to grow. Through concrete and steel. The next day I went to Mothergrove. Myra Ballard gave me pennyroyal tea. I’m sorry I never told you, I didn’t want you to worry. She told me, "Child, your roots are strong enough to grow. Through concrete and steel." 0803AE27

It’s cold in the kitchen this morning The moon lingers late, a pale cream crescent How many clouds came this way in the nighttime Leaving this chill and erasing the landscape 0905xx30
