The cherry blossomed early in the warm wet spring
You were rolling a blown tire up the driveway
The morning light was gentle
The white petals falling lazily behind you
The tire and the gravel and your footsteps had a rhythm
A goldfinch and the north wind were the chorus
Though my arm was in a sling
I danced a little two step with the coat rack
So I spun back to the counter for the encore
In the glitter of the dust in the slant-light from the window
I gave the fridge a bow and started laughing
I heard the screendoor swing like a curtain falling
“Are you ready for some coffee?” I called across the room
You said, “The cherry’s blooming.” I said, “I saw it.”
You said, “I put the spare on; it’s old but it still holds air.”

Old Sylacauga is washed out pretty badly
South of the Mill Road.
I had to take 21
All the way down.
All my years of resistance
Are coming back to bite me
Just like you said they would.
I guess it’s time to get a truck if I’m sticking around.
You know I thought I’d have to work harder
And look so much farther for a place in this world.
Emma said “52 more days,
It’s hard to believe.
Thank goodness for Julia
With her fennel seed and ginger tea.”
“You’re going to be there, right?
When the midwife calls and says it’s time?”
I took her hand in mind,
And we both smiled.
You know I thought I’d have to work harder
And look so much farther for a place in this world.
When Julia asked me to live with them in Asheville
I don’t know why I stayed.
But now, I can’t imagine
Being anywhere else.
I always figured you’d have a baby or two.
I think you’ve known
For awhile
This place would be home for you.
You know I thought I’d have to work harder
And look so much farther for a place in this world.
