Alan Catches a Break

I’d been rebuilding transmissions in Morgantown
When Richard pulled me aside.
He said “Son, you’re not young,
But you’ve still got plenty of time.”
“I’ve got abandoned Bounty land outside Bennington.
It’s yours if you keep the place up.
Water got in ‘76
But it’s a roof and a bed and it’s quiet enough.”
I tossed out my Carolina clothes,
And Richard gave me his boots.
When we got to the top of Dorsey Knot,
He said “This could be good for you.”
“I spent some time there myself, chasing off ghosts,
When I first got back home from Cam Lộ.
I don’t know what you’ve been through but it’s usually true
There’s time enough to atone.”
So I hitchhiked through Bedford, Tipton, Tyronne,
Spent September in Hudson.
I reached Richard’s cabin before the first snow
And got to mending the rafters.

It's a Start

It's a Start
The black storm that had gathered
On the mountaintop relented
And the dawn broke with green and orange plumes
I'm not much for superstition
But it felt like finally
Some better times were arriving
So I took my cup of coffee
And walked east through the tall grasses
Toward that strange morning light.
I found a ledge in the hillside to sit under
And wait out the afternoon's rain
There was scrap of newsprint in the dirt there
So I read the same three sentences over and over
I listened to a barn owl inquiring
And I watched another sun setting.
I still think of you often in these evening times.

the Rocking Horse

I can feel tomorrow's rain
Where they pinned my shoulder back together
I walk the dirt track into town
To telephone Emma for her birthday.
I'm hoping she'll invite me down
To visit this winter at her and Jon's place
Like maybe enough water
Has finally passed beneath our bridges.
When she couldn't fall asleep
I'd sing "the night of the Johnstown Flood."
Later after Jen was born,
She'd sing the words with me.
When we spoke in May
There was a warmth to her demeanor
She asked for my address here
To send a picture of Christopher
The rocking horse I'm carving
Needs a second coat of paint
My shoulder aches from sanding
But I'd like to finish it for Christmas Day.
