lyrics

It was fun for the first few weeks
After Paul got fired.
We’d drink gin and iced tea on the front stoop
In the late afternoons.

At dusk we’d walk down to the bar on Dekalb
To meet Marsha and you.
And we’d all sing along to old Motown songs
Benny would play on the juke.

After awhile the money got tight
So I took a few shifts at the diner.
Paul switched to whiskey and quit looking for work
Coming home later and later.

Then he got in that fight with the Dice Boys at Benny’s
And lost the jacket I gave him at Christmas.
Came into the restaurant with blood on his shirt
And I said it’s over.

I spent the fall on friends’ couches,
By New Year’s I’d moved to that place on Lorraine.
Paul showed to St. Mary’s Ash Wednesday
I heard he was looking good, not great.

Marsha turned 30, we were both at her party.
I drank enough scotch to forget how we left things.
We kiss in the alley until I remembered.
I pushed him away, walked twelve blocks to the train.
