lyrics

I’ll take the afternoon,
Get a bag together.
I’ll be there before dark.
I’ll stay until they catch
Whoever's breaking into
People’s homes here at the park.

Don’t put me in our bedroom.
The pullout in the old den will suit me fine.
Don’t breathe a word to Christopher
I’ll be waiting in the kitchen
In the morning,
To catch him by surprise.

I love to see him laughing,
At that same kitchen table,
Where we read books with Mom.
When Pop came home
He’d chase us,
Running circles round the yard.

Remember that tornado
That tore through in October
And knocked the oak tree through our roof
All through that November
We camped out in the den,
While Papa fixed the roof.

I’ll come up Coleman Road
And grab some extra firewood.
You know the den gets cold.
When I slept there after treatments,
I’d watch the fire shudder like we did
When I was six years old.

It’ll be so nice this winter
Sitting in the kitchen
With that sweet little child.
And later in the evening,
Drinking whiskey by the fire.
