lyrics

I thought I felt a little rain
And watched the first drops darken the pavement.
I was waiting at the bus station;
The midnight to New York was running late.

At times like this I wonder
The way life might meander if I bought a ticket elsewhere, or just stayed here.
I could rent that little place above the gas station,
And visit with my mother every Sunday.

Or I could move back to Asheville,
I'm sure the boys at the Mothlight have been missing my whiskey sours.
But then over the loudspeaker: "Boarding for Richmond"
And I think that's my transfer so I head inside.

There's a two person line at gate number three, and the driver outside is tapping a headlight.
The flashing on the station wall, like some coded message, warning me not to leave.
The driver asks for "tickets please" when it's my turn I hand him mine hesitantly.
I board the bus and settle in for a long night.
