lyrics

I was having a cigarette on Jarret Street
When a gray-haired man asked if he could buy one from me.
I didn’t think much of it at the time
Until he wandered into the bar that night.

In the neon light I could see,
But I’m not sure when I believed
That worn down man,
Was someone so familiar to me.

He pushed the candle away,
He said "I can't abide an open flame."
I heard a little Alabama in his tone.
I said, “what brings you to Asheville on your own?”

He said, “I lost my old life in a fire.
It made me distant, mean and a liar.
And I don’t know where I’m going,
I just know I’m tired."

I slid a beer across the bar and he gave me a nod.
I stepped into the alley to give Julia a call.
I said, “I know it’s your night off, but can you come downtown?
I think Jen and Emma’s Dad is sitting in our bar.”
